Well, today I took the plunge! After hanging on to hair as long as possible, my wife finally convinced me that I was looking a bit too patchy. So, when finally feeling awake and well enough, I got the shaver and went to work. First step—mohawk. That was a lot of fun. Sort of a white version of “The Last of the Mohicans.”
Then we lathered up and really got serious. A few moments later, and with the help of Mom on the very back, I emerged with that radiant, white glow. In response from friends, I’ve heard everything from Mr. Clean to Bruce Willis to Shrek to my father and grandfather. My primary comment about baldness is quite simple really—my head is cold!
The best part of my day was when Haylee saw it. I went into the office for a few hours, and called her out of school to my office. I didn’t want others to tell her about it, just incase she might be emotional about it. To my delight and surprise, she walked in, broke into a huge smile, giggled cutely, and said, “Hey… you look cool!” Then she came over to my desk and started rubbing my head! Dana and I were so worried that she was going to get emotional, and she was way at the other end of the spectrum. The whole family took it harder than she did. She just laughed and went with it.
That’s why I snapped the photo above—it was a moment to remember, and her expression was genuine and priceless! She was just so cool in that moment, and it really did my heart good!
The past few days have afforded me enough energy to do a few hours or work each day, but by the afternoon I’ve been wiped out and feeling sick again. Well see what the next couple of days hold.
PS—Special thanks to the Neyer family who so thoughtfully put together a gift bag of “head-shaving” tools! What a blessing and I’m so thankful for their thoughtfulness!
